Photographed last May on the rugged Washington coast, this picture was a challenge to process. I am still not very happy with the results but like any parent of a kid this one needs to go out into the world and find a place for herself/himself.
This was shot the same evening as my other Rialto beach image “Focus”. The sheer energy and excitement I experienced while photographing this is unforgettable. I shot this handheld since I was not comfortable rushing in and out with a tripod as the waves rushed and receded.
Using a ultra wide angle lens affords you interesting compositions and allows you to go very close to the subject or in this case the water. It is not without some downside however. Lets just say that lens that was used for this shot got a nice spa treatment during the shoot and later to remove the make up.
Part of Olympic National Park, Rialto Beach is a pristine beach with rugged features bordered by the dense Olympic Wilderness to the East and the Vast Pacific Ocean to the West. One of the few places on the contiguous US coastline (but one of many in the Pacific Northwest) that offers profound, peaceful, and serene seclusion. The energy and power of the Pacific Ocean becomes apparent when you see the massive driftwood lying on the edge of the beaches like matchsticks.
